Tidal exposure in crabs

MSc research

Intertidal organisms have to tolerate the transition between a marine and terrestrial environment on a daily basis due to the ebb and flow of the tide.

Our understanding of the physiology of intertidal organisms is based on organisms that have been acclimated to permanently submerged conditions rather than the cyclic exposure to air organisms experience in nature. My MSc research investigated how acclimation to cyclic exposure to air altered the physiological responses of the green crab Carcinus maenas, to environmental stressors they typically experience in the intertidal zone such as air exposure, warming, and hypoxia.
